The plant out there is operating right now within the boundaries that its designers created for it. Some of those boundaries are generous — the designers knew the physics and gave it ample room. Some are tight — the designers were under schedule pressure or lacked the knowledge or did not check the calculation. Some may be wrong — and the physics is operating against them right now, 83 cycles per second, one thermal cycle per startup, one milligram of wall per month.

Most of those will never produce a failure. The plant will be decommissioned before the physics reaches the boundary. But some of them will find the boundary. And when they do, they will cross it.
